Baby & Children's Rings

Children's Rings by Size, Design & Gold Colour

A children's ring is a small object with a short useful life and a long second life. It is bought to fit a finger that will change, it is usually given to mark a specific occasion, and it is very often kept long after it has stopped fitting. Those three facts shape how these rings are made and how they are best chosen. This is a curated selection of baby and children's designs in gold, with the size, band width and design described on each listing.

Sizing, Occasions and What Happens Afterwards

A children's ring is chosen against a finger that changes, given to mark a date, and usually kept. This guide covers how the small sizes work, how long a fit lasts, what these rings are given for, and how they are built.

How a child's ring is sized

Children's rings use the same numbered scale as adult rings, simply at its lower end. The very smallest bands, made for infants, sit near the bottom of the scale, and children's rings occupy the sizes above them. Because the scale is continuous, a ring described by a number can be compared directly with any other ring, which is useful when the piece is bought as a gift and the size has to be inferred rather than measured. Half sizes are available at the small end, and on a narrow band they make a real difference.

What a year or two of growth does to the fit

Growth is not steady and it is not the same across the hand, but across a year or two a child's finger circumference changes enough to move up the scale by a size and often further. That is the central difficulty in buying these rings, and there is no way to design it away. A ring bought to fit exactly is fitting the moment it is bought. A ring bought two sizes up will turn and slide until it is grown into, and may be lost before it is. Most buyers split the difference.

The occasions a ring is given at

A ring given at a naming, a baptism or a christening marks the date rather than being intended for immediate daily wear, and it is common for it to be kept and worn later or not at all. A first communion or confirmation ring is given to someone old enough to wear it, and it usually is worn. Birthday rings occupy a middle position, marking a year rather than a rite. In every case what distinguishes a ring from other gifts given at the same moments is that it is sized to a person, which is precisely what makes it dated.

Engraving a very small band

A narrow band offers a strip of surface only a millimetre or two high on the inside, which restricts engraving to a single line at a small letter height. Machine engraving handles that better than hand cutting, because the tool can be held to a consistent depth across a curved interior. Initials and a date fit comfortably where a full name and a message will not. On wider bands and on rings with a flat top face, the exterior offers a second surface, which changes what is possible considerably.

Keeping the ring afterwards

Most of these rings outlive their fit by decades, and what happens to them then is worth thinking about at the point of purchase. The common outcomes are that the ring is kept in its box as a record of the occasion, or that it is threaded onto a chain and worn as a pendant, which suits a plain band particularly well. A third route exists where the design allows it: a continuous band with no stones or decoration across the shank can sometimes be opened out by a jeweller, whereas a decorated shank generally cannot.

How these rings are built differently from adult rings

Everything is reduced, but not uniformly. Band widths come down to a millimetre or two, and the profile is kept low so the ring does not stand away from the finger. Decoration is more often engraved, pierced or cast into the surface than built above it. Where stones are used they are typically flush-set into the band or held in a bezel, so the outline of the ring stays smooth and unbroken. The result is a piece with a much simpler silhouette than the equivalent adult design.

Sizing and Occasions

What size are children's rings usually made in?

They use the standard numbered scale at its lower end. Infant bands sit at the very bottom of it, with children's sizes running upward from there toward the smallest adult numbers.

Because it is a single continuous scale, a children's size can be compared directly with an adult one, and a jeweller measuring a finger uses the same gauge either way.

Half sizes exist at the small end and are worth using, since a half-size step is proportionally a larger change on a small circumference than on a large one.

How long will a child's ring fit?

That varies with age and with the individual, but a period measured in months to a couple of years is realistic rather than pessimistic. Finger circumference changes noticeably during childhood.

The narrower the band, the more tolerant the fit, because a narrow ring passes a knuckle more easily and sits comfortably across a wider range of sizes than a wide one.

Buying with a little room extends the period but introduces turning and slipping, so the choice is between a shorter good fit and a longer imperfect one.

Which occasions are children's rings given at?

The established ones are a naming, a baptism or a christening, a first communion, a confirmation, and birthdays, particularly a first birthday or one that marks a step in age.

What these have in common is that the ring records a date. That is why so many are engraved, and why the design is usually kept simple enough to leave room for it.

A ring is distinct from other gifts given at the same moments in that it is sized to a specific finger, which ties the object to the person as well as the day.

Can a very small band be engraved?

Usually yes, though the space imposes real limits. The interior of a one or two millimetre band gives a single narrow line, so the letter height has to be small and the text short.

Machine engraving copes with a small curved interior better than hand cutting does, because the tool can be held at a consistent depth across the curve where a hand-held graver would wander.

Rings with a flat top face or a wider shoulder offer an additional surface on the outside, which opens up options a plain narrow band does not have.

Where is engraving placed on a child's ring?

The inside of the band is the usual position, both because it is the surface that exists on every design and because the text is then private to the wearer.

Where a ring has a flat top, a signet-style face or a broadened shoulder, the outside becomes available and can carry initials or a small motif at a larger size than the interior allows.

On a very narrow band the placement is effectively decided for you, since there is only one strip of surface long enough to take a line of text.

Why are children's rings usually plain?

Partly because scale forces it. A design that works at adult proportions loses its legibility when reduced to a band a millimetre or two wide, so simpler forms hold up better.

Partly because these rings are usually engraved, and engraving needs an uninterrupted surface to sit on. Heavy decoration competes with the inscription for the same space.

And partly convention: the form settled long ago on a low, smooth profile with the decoration held inside the outline, and most designs work within that expectation rather than against it.

Can a childhood ring be worn later in life?

Often, though rarely on the same finger. The most common route is to thread it onto a chain and wear it as a pendant, which suits a plain band well and needs no alteration at all.

Where the design is a continuous unadorned band, a jeweller can sometimes open it out to a larger size. A shank carrying stones or decoration around its circumference generally cannot be altered that way.

The third outcome, and a perfectly common one, is that the ring is kept rather than worn, held in its box as a record of the occasion it was given to mark.

How is a children's ring built differently from an adult one?

The band is proportionally narrower, commonly a millimetre or two, and the profile is kept low so the ring sits close rather than standing above the finger.

Decoration tends to be worked into the surface rather than raised above it, using engraving, piercing or texture cast directly into the band instead of separately made elements soldered on top.

Stones are more often set flush with the band or held in a bezel than raised on prongs, which keeps the outline of the ring smooth and its profile close to the finger.

Do children's rings come in half sizes?

Half sizes exist at the small end of the scale and are commonly available. They matter more here than they do on adult rings, because a half-size step represents a larger proportional change on a small circumference.

On a narrow band the difference between a half size up and a half size down is the difference between a ring that turns and one that sits still.

Whether a particular design is offered in half sizes is stated on its listing, since it depends on how the piece is made and on whether the shank carries decoration all the way round.

Should I order a size up so the ring lasts longer?

It is a common approach and it does extend the period the ring can be worn, but it is a trade rather than a free gain. A ring with room in it rotates, so the decorated face does not stay uppermost.

A single size up is usually the sensible ceiling. Beyond that the ring slides over the knuckle too easily to stay on the finger reliably.

A narrow band tolerates the extra room better than a wide one, because it moves more freely over the knuckle and is less inclined to bind when it is finally grown into.
