Miami Cuban Gold Chain

Miami Cuban Chains by Width, Karat & Profile

The Miami Cuban is a specific profile of the Cuban link: the ovals are closed more tightly still, the metal is thicker, and the top of each link rises to a pronounced dome while the underside is ground flat. The chain that results is denser, higher and more sculptural than an ordinary Cuban, with a surface that reads as one continuous polished ridge rather than two rails and a seam. This page describes what the Miami geometry changes, how the profile lies against the body and reflects light, and how it is fastened and worn. Width in millimetres and karat are stated on each listing.

Where an ordinary Cuban link nests into the next with a small opening still showing, a Miami link is closed so tightly that the ovals overlap through most of their length and the openings between them all but disappear. The wire is thicker again for the size of the ring, and after assembly the top of the chain is worked to a high dome, so that each link's exposed surface curves steeply from the centre line down to the edges. The finished chain is noticeably deeper front to back than a plain Cuban of the same width, and heavier for its length.

The dome changes the way the chain lies. A rounded link that is domed rather than merely cushioned presents a ridge along the centre of the chain, and light falling across it reflects from the crest as a single bright band that runs the whole length without a break. There is none of the alternation of link and seam that an ordinary Cuban shows; the seams are buried by the overlap and the eye follows the highlight as one line. Turning the chain shifts the band from side to side across the dome, and the effect is closer to a polished bar than a run of links.

The underside is the other half of the geometry. Once domed, the chain is passed over a flat lap that grinds the back of every link to a single plane, and the Miami profile therefore has a flat face against the skin and a domed face to the world. The flat back is what lets a chain of this depth lie still: it sits on the chest as a plate would, cannot rock from side to side, and does not roll. Because the links overlap so far, the chain also bends less freely than a plain Cuban, holding a firm smooth arc rather than a loose curve.

A Miami Cuban is fastened with a box clasp built to the same depth and dome as the links, so that the fastening reads as an unbroken part of the run, and at heavier widths it carries a hinged latch on each side of the housing. The chain is made from around six millimetres, where the dome is subtle, through eight to twelve millimetres, where the profile is unmistakable, up to eighteen millimetres and beyond. It is worn as the piece itself, most often on its own and outside the collar, and it is chosen precisely for the presence its depth and weight give it.

The Miami Cuban is a scaled-up refinement of the standard Cuban link: each individual link is larger, flatter, and with a more pronounced beveled edge than the classic oval Cuban. This enlarged geometry is specifically optimized for wider chains — at 8mm, 10mm, or 12mm, the Miami Cuban proportions look balanced and intentional where a standard Cuban at those widths can look stretched.

What Separates Miami Cuban from Standard Cuban

The flat face of each Miami Cuban link is wider relative to the link's height than a standard Cuban, meaning more surface area faces outward. More outward-facing surface means more consistent, intense light reflection across the full width of the chain. At wide widths, this creates the mirror-belt effect that makes the Miami Cuban the signature statement chain in heavy gold.

How to Choose Your Width

A 4–6mm Miami Cuban reads as bold but versatile for daily wear. An 8–10mm chain is unmistakably a focal piece. At 12mm and above the weight and presence become significant. Wider chains contain more gold, so width affects both how the chain wears and what it costs.

How the Miami Profile Is Built and How It Behaves

The Miami Cuban is defined by geometry rather than by a different link, and this guide is about that geometry: the tighter interlock, the dome that rises from it, the flat underside ground into the back, the single band of light the crest returns, the firm arc the chain holds against the chest, and the box clasp built to match it. It ends with how the chain is worn.

The tighter interlock that sets the Miami profile apart

Every Cuban nests one link into the next, but a Miami takes the nesting further. The ovals are drawn together until each overlaps its neighbour through most of its length, and the small openings that show along an ordinary Cuban close up to a line. Wire that is thicker for the ring size fills what space remains. The result is a chain with almost no daylight in it, in which the links behave less as separate hinges and more as segments of a single articulated bar. It is visible from across a room as a solidity a plain Cuban of the same width lacks.

A domed top, and a back ground flat

After assembly the top surface of the chain is worked to a high dome, so that each link's face curves steeply away from a crest along the centre line. The back is then ground on a flat lap until every link presents one plane to the skin. Seen in section, a Miami link is therefore a half-round: rounded above, flat below, and much deeper than it is on an ordinary Cuban. It is what allows a chain of this depth to sit stably, since a domed link with a domed back would rock, while a domed link on a flat base sits like a tile.

One continuous band of light along the crest

A dome reflects from its crest, and because the links overlap so far that the seams between them are buried, the crests of successive links join into an unbroken ridge. Light falling across the chain returns from that ridge as a single bright band running the full length, rather than the alternating rails and crescents an ordinary Cuban shows. As the chain turns, the band slides across the dome from one flank to the other, so the whole chain appears to brighten and dim as one object. A diamond-cut version breaks the ridge into small planes and glitters instead.

How the profile lies against the chest

The flat back sits on the skin as a plate, and the far overlap of the links means the chain has only a little movement at each joint. A Miami therefore holds a firm, smooth arc across the chest rather than draping into a loose curve, and it neither rolls nor rocks when the wearer moves. It rises higher off the body than a plain Cuban because of its depth, which is part of its presence: the dome catches light from a wider range of angles and the chain is seen from the side as well as the front.

The box clasp built to the link

A chain this deep needs a fastening of the same depth, and the box clasp on a Miami is made to it. The housing is shaped with the same dome on top and the same flat underside as the links, finished to the same width, so that when closed it reads as one more segment of the run. The folded tongue from the other end slides in and clicks against a spring, and on heavier widths a hinged latch on each flank snaps over the joint, so that the clasp cannot open unless both latches are lifted first.

Wearing a Miami Cuban

The profile is worn to be seen, and it is usually worn alone. Its depth means it stands out from the chest more than a flatter chain, and its weight means it stays exactly where it settles, so it is most often worn outside the collar or on bare skin where the full band of light along the crest is visible. A pendant is possible at the narrower widths, though the dome gives a bail a rounded surface to sit on rather than a flat one, and most Miami chains are worn without.

Standard Cuban links at those widths can look stretched because the standard link ratio wasn't designed for that scale.

Choosing width is the key decision. An 8–10mm chain is unmistakably a focal piece. At 12mm+, the chain has the weight and presence of a significant jewelry statement. Gold weight increases substantially with width — a 12mm chain in 14K will weigh several times more than a 6mm chain at the same length, which is also reflected in price.

Understanding the Miami Cuban Profile

What makes a Miami Cuban different from an ordinary Cuban chain?

The geometry. A Miami closes its links more tightly, so each oval overlaps its neighbour through most of its length, uses thicker wire for the ring size, raises the top of the chain to a pronounced dome, and grinds the underside flat.

The result is a chain that is deeper front to back, heavier for its length, and stiffer along its run than a plain Cuban of the same width. It reads as one polished ridge rather than two rails with a seam between.

It is treated as its own style rather than a filter because those changes alter how the chain lies, how it reflects and how it is fastened, not merely how it looks in a photograph.

Why are the links of a Miami Cuban domed?

The dome is worked into the top of the chain after assembly, and it does two things. It gives each link a crest along the centre line, and because the links overlap so far, those crests join into one continuous ridge.

That ridge is what the chain reflects from. A single band of light runs the length of the chain and slides across the dome as it turns, which is the look the profile is chosen for.

The dome also adds depth. A Miami stands higher off the chest than a flatter chain of the same width, so it is seen from the side as well as the front and catches light from a wider range of angles.

Why is the underside of a Miami Cuban flat?

So that the chain sits still. A link that is domed on top and rounded underneath would rock from side to side on the skin; grinding the back to a single plane gives the chain a base to rest on, like a tile.

The flat back is made on a lap after the dome has been formed, and it runs the full length of the chain, including the clasp housing, so every part of the run lies at the same height against the body.

It is also the reason the chain does not roll. With a rounded top and a flat bottom there is only one way for it to lie, and its weight keeps it there.

Why does a Miami Cuban reflect as one band of light?

Because the seams are buried. The links overlap so far that the joints between them do not show on the top surface, and the crest of each dome runs straight into the crest of the next without a break.

Light falling across the chain therefore returns from a continuous ridge, and the eye follows it as a single bright line the full length of the piece. An ordinary Cuban shows its joints, and its light alternates along the run.

As the chain turns, the band moves across the dome from one side to the other, so the whole chain brightens and dims together rather than sparkling link by link.

Does a Miami Cuban chain bend as freely as an ordinary Cuban?

No. Each link overlaps its neighbour through most of its length, so it has only a short arc of free movement before it bears on the next. The chain holds a firm smooth curve rather than draping loosely.

Around the neck that firmness is an advantage: the chain keeps its arc across the chest and does not bunch or sag. It also means the chain should be lifted on and off rather than folded.

Bent sharply across its depth, the overlapping links have nowhere to go and the chain can be strained at a joint. Stored flat or hung, it keeps its shape indefinitely.

Why is the clasp on a Miami Cuban so large?

Because it is built to the link. The box housing is made with the same dome on top, the same flat underside and the same width as the links, so that when closed it reads as one more segment of the chain rather than a fitting.

A fastening of that size carries the load of a heavy chain across its full width, where a small clasp would concentrate it on a single ring and become the point that gives first.

On heavier widths the housing carries a hinged latch on each flank that snaps over the joint. Both have to be lifted before the sprung tongue can be released, so the chain cannot open under a knock.

Does a Miami Cuban chain suit a pendant?

It can carry one at the narrower widths, but it is usually worn without. The chain is chosen for the band of light along its crest, and a pendant sits across that band and interrupts it.

The dome also gives a bail a rounded surface to rest on rather than a flat one, so a pendant tends to sit slightly forward of the chain rather than lying against it.

Where a pendant is wanted, a wide bail cut to clear the full depth of the link is needed, and the pendant should be heavy enough not to be moved about by the chain's own stiffness.

How is a Miami Cuban usually worn?

Alone, and visible. Its depth and weight make it the piece rather than a carrier, and it is most often worn outside the collar or on bare skin so that the full run of the dome is seen.

It settles into a firm arc across the chest and stays there. Because the flat back keeps it still, it can be worn all day without adjusting, and the clasp remains at the nape.

Layered, the Miami is always the outer and lower chain. A finer chain sits above it, since nothing lighter can hang in front of its depth without being pushed out of line.

Does a Miami Cuban stay in place when the wearer moves?

Yes. The flat underside rests on the chest as a plate, the weight holds it down, and the links have too little free movement for the chain to ripple or swing. It moves with the body as one piece.

There is no rolling, because a chain with a domed top and a flat bottom has only one way to lie, and no creeping of the clasp round the neck, because the run is equally weighted on both sides.

A very active day may shift the arc a little to one side, and it is pulled back to centre by hand. That is the extent of the adjustment a Miami needs.

What widths does the Miami profile come in?

From around six millimetres, where the dome is present but subtle and the chain reads as a firm, deep Cuban, through eight, ten and twelve millimetres, which is the range in which the profile is unmistakable.

Fourteen, sixteen and eighteen millimetres are made for those who want the chain as the whole statement, and wider still exists. At these sizes the box clasp carries latches on both flanks.

The shape of the link does not change as it grows; what increases is the depth of the dome and the mass of each link. Each listing states the width and karat of that chain.
