Miami Cuban Gold Bracelets

The Miami link overlaps its neighbour through most of its length, is thicker for its size than an ordinary Cuban link, is domed on top and ground flat beneath. On a bracelet those properties are concentrated into a short run. The crest of the dome forms an unbroken ridge around the wrist, the flat underside sits on the skin as a single plane, and the joints between links are buried under the overlap, so the bracelet reads as a curved bar of gold rather than a chain. From the side the depth is obvious; the band stands well off the wrist and its edge is a smooth half-round.

Because each link has so little free movement before it bears on the next, a Miami bracelet holds its curve firmly. It does not collapse when taken off and it does not drape; laid down it keeps the arc of the wrist. On the arm this means it turns as one rigid-feeling piece rather than rippling, and it sits high on the forearm when fitted close or slides as a unit to the wrist bone when fitted looser. The flat underside keeps the dome on top: a half-round section resting on its flat cannot roll, so the ridge of light stays uppermost wherever the band comes to rest.

The clasp on a Miami bracelet is built to the same dome, depth and width as the links and reads as one more segment of the ridge, which on a wrist means it is always in view. When the hand hangs the weight rolls it to the underside, where the flat back lets it lie against the inner wrist without rocking. On heavier widths a hinged latch on each side of the housing closes over the joint; both are lifted with a thumbnail to release the tongue, which makes the bracelet deliberate to take off and firmly held while it is on.

Stacking is decided by the profile's height. A Miami stands taller than almost anything worn beside it, so a finer bracelet on the same wrist sits either above it, toward the forearm, or is pushed against it and rides on its flank. Two Miami bracelets side by side lock into a single broad band. Sizing is done in whole links, and because a Miami link is deep and heavy, each link removed is a distinct step in length; the bracelet is fitted so that the flat underside rests on the wrist without pinching when the hand bends back. Widths run from around six millimetres to eighteen and beyond.

A domed band rather than a run of links

A wrist takes only a short length of Miami link, and because the links overlap so far and the seams between them are buried by the dome, that length reads as one continuous polished ridge curving round the arm. There are no visible ovals to count and no scalloped seam; the eye follows a single crest of light from clasp to clasp. From the side the band shows its full depth, a smooth half-round standing well off the wrist, and from above it shows as a solid bar. The same width worn at the neck reads as a chain; on the wrist the Miami reads as a bangle with joints.

Why the tight overlap barely flexes on a bracelet

Each Miami link can move only a short arc before it bears on the link it overlaps, and around a wrist that limit is reached almost at once, since the band is already curved to its working radius. The bracelet is therefore nearly rigid in use. It turns with the arm as one piece, keeps its curve when taken off, and does not drape or collapse. The joints do give a little when the wrist bends back, which is what lets the band sit close without pinching, but a Miami bracelet is never folded, and it is stored in the curve it wears rather than laid out straight.

The clasp as a segment of the ridge

The box clasp on a Miami bracelet is made to the link: domed on top, flat underneath, the same width and depth as the run, so that when it is closed it continues the ridge without a break. It is finished to the same standard as the links and is part of the look. The tongue clicks into the housing against a spring, and on heavier bracelets a hinged latch on each flank is closed over the joint by thumb. To take the bracelet off, both latches are lifted with a thumbnail and the tongue is pressed to release it.

The flat inner face against the wrist

The underside of a Miami bracelet is ground to a single plane, and that plane rests on the wrist as a band would. It spreads the weight across the full width of the link rather than along a line, which is why a heavy Miami is more comfortable on the arm than its mass suggests, and it gives the bracelet a base that cannot roll. The dome therefore stays on top and the clasp, when it has rolled to the underside, lies flat against the inner wrist.

Stacking a Miami profile with other bracelets

A Miami is the tallest thing on the wrist, and stacking arranges itself around that. A finer chain bracelet worn beside it either sits above it toward the forearm or is pushed against its flank and rides there, since it cannot pass over the dome. A bangle of similar depth sits alongside as an equal. Two Miami bracelets side by side lock into one broad domed band, with the seam between them barely visible. Worn alone, which is the more common choice, the band has the wrist to itself and its full depth is seen from every angle as the arm moves.

Sizing in whole links

A Miami bracelet is shortened or lengthened by whole links only, and because each link is deep and heavy, one link is a distinct step in length rather than a fine adjustment. The jeweller cuts a link at its seam, frees it from the overlapping links on either side, removes or adds the number required, and solders the cut link closed before restoring the dome and the flat back across the joint. The band is fitted so that its flat underside rests on the wrist and there is room for the hand to bend back without the ridge digging in.
