Ring Size Guide + Chart

Ring size is a measurement, not a guess — and getting it right matters more for gold rings because solid gold can be resized, but starting close saves cost and preserves designs. Here is the full chart with international conversions, and every reliable way to measure.

Women most commonly wear US 5–7; men most commonly US 9–11. EU size equals the circumference in millimeters, so your string measurement IS your EU size.

How to measure at home — three ways

1. Existing-ring method (most accurate): take a ring that already fits the intended finger and measure its inside diameter in millimeters with a ruler — match it to the diameter column above.

2. String or paper method: wrap a thin strip of paper or string snugly around the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in millimeters — match it to the circumference column. Wrap snug but not tight: the strip should slide over the knuckle with light resistance.

3. At a jeweler: most jewelry counters will size your finger free in seconds — worth it before an engagement ring or eternity band, where exact fit matters most.

When to measure: at the end of the day, at room temperature. Fingers are smallest in the morning and in the cold — a ring sized then will pinch by evening.

When to size up (or down)

Wide bands (6mm+) fit tighter than thin ones — add a quarter size. Comfort-fit bands run slightly loose — usually true to size. If the knuckle is larger than the finger base, fit the knuckle and let the ring sit slightly free. Wedding bands worn 24/7 do best a quarter size up from the exact measurement.

Buying a ring as a surprise

Borrow a ring they wear on the same finger and trace its inside circle on paper, or press it briefly into a bar of soap and measure the impression. Ask a friend or family member — someone usually knows. When all else fails: US 6–6.5 for women and US 10–10.5 for men are the statistical centers, and a solid gold ring can be resized after the yes.

Resizing gold and platinum rings

Solid gold typically resizes up or down about two sizes; most jewelers can do it. Platinum resizes too, though it takes a platinum-experienced bench. Exceptions: full eternity bands (stones all the way around) and some patterned bands cannot be resized — order exact size for those. One more argument for solid over plated: plated rings cannot be resized without exposing base metal.
