Men's Gold Rings

Men's Gold Rings by Family, Finger & Setting

This page gathers gold rings proportioned for a man and worn for reasons other than marriage: the signet, the nugget, the religious ring, the plain and patterned band worn as ornament, and the stone-set ring in its various forms. Each family has its own page where its construction is explained. What this page covers is the decision that comes before any of them: which finger the ring will go on and what that choice changes, how a stone-set ring is chosen for a hand that works, what the little finger asks of a ring, how a ring shares an arm with a watch and a bracelet, and how a wide ring is sized when the knuckle is larger than the finger behind it.

The finger decides more than the size. A ring on the ring finger of the right hand is where the eye expects a ring and is the least remarked; on the middle finger it sits at the centre of the hand and is seen from every angle, which suits a larger piece; on the index finger it is in the line of sight whenever the hand points, gestures or holds something, and it reads as deliberate. The little finger is the smallest site and the most exposed, and is discussed on its own below. Each finger also moves differently, so a ring meets different knocks depending on where it is.

The families are easiest to hold in mind as a short list. A signet carries a flat face, engraved or plain. A nugget ring has a textured, cast surface. A religious ring carries a cross, a saint or an inscription. A band ring is a plain or patterned circle worn as ornament rather than as a wedding band. A stone-set ring holds one stone or several, at any profile from flush with the metal to raised above it. The listing states the family, the width across the top, the metal and, where a stone is present, how it is set.

For a hand that works, the setting matters more than the stone. A stone that stands above the metal is the highest point on the hand, and it meets tool handles, door frames, gloves and machinery before anything else does. A stone set so that its top sits level with the surrounding gold, or below it, is shielded on every side and slides under a glove without catching. The families that lend themselves to this are the signet with a small inset stone and the band with stones let into its surface. The listing names the setting; a low setting is worth insisting on if the hand is busy.

A ring, a watch and a bracelet on one arm are three objects along a few inches, and they are seen together. The watch is the largest and sets the scale; a ring on the same hand is read against the watch case, and a bracelet beside the watch is read against its strap. The usual arrangement puts the watch on the non-writing wrist, the bracelet beside it or on the other arm, and the ring wherever the hand feels right. The pieces need not share a colour, but a ring that repeats the finish of the watch, bright with bright or brushed with brushed, sits more quietly.

How a Men's Gold Ring Is Placed, Chosen and Sized

A ring is the most exposed piece of jewelry a man wears and the most personal, since it is on the hand he uses and looks at all day. This guide covers what each finger does to a ring, the families of ring outside the wedding band, why a stone is set low on a working hand, what makes the pinky ring its own case, how a ring sits beside a watch and a bracelet, and how a wide ring is sized past a large knuckle.

Index, middle, ring and little finger: what moves with each

A ring's finger sets its exposure. The index finger leads every gesture and every grip, so a ring there is the first thing to meet a surface and is knocked more than a ring anywhere else; it also sits in the line of sight whenever the hand is used. The middle finger is the longest and most central, and a ring there is seen squarely from the front and takes fewer edge blows, which is why larger rings gravitate to it. The ring finger is the conventional site, sheltered between two neighbours, and a ring there is the least noticed. The little finger is treated below.

The families outside the wedding band

Set aside marriage and a man's rings fall into a handful of families, each with a page of its own. The signet presents a flat face on top of the finger, plain or engraved, and reads as a mark of identity. The nugget ring has a cast, irregular, textured surface and reads as a piece of raw metal. The religious ring carries a symbol or an inscription and is worn for what it says. The band ring is a plain or patterned circle chosen as ornament. The stone-set ring holds one or more stones at any profile. Most rings belong plainly to one family, and the listing states which.

A stone kept within the metal, for a hand that works

The height of a stone above the ring is what matters most on a working hand. A raised stone is the tallest point on the hand, so a glove drags over it, a tool handle presses on it and a door frame catches it, each a chance to loosen or scratch it. A stone set low, its table level with or below the gold, is met by nothing the metal is not met by first. The families that suit this are the signet with a small inset stone and the band with stones sunk into its surface; the listing states the setting and the side view shows the height.

The pinky ring, and why it is a different object

The little finger is the smallest site on the hand and the most exposed, since its outer side meets every surface the hand rests on. A ring there is seen in profile more than from above, so it needs a shape that reads from the side: a domed or faceted band, a signet whose face is turned a little outward. It is also sized differently, because the little finger's knuckle is often large relative to the finger, so the ring must pass a knuckle and then stay on a slimmer base. A pinky ring is the most deliberate ring a man wears, since nothing about the site is conventional.

Ring, watch and bracelet on one arm

The three pieces are seen together and read by size. The watch is the largest and anchors the arm; a ring on that hand is compared with the case, a bracelet with the strap. If the watch and the bracelet are both heavy, a heavy ring crowds the arm, and the usual correction is to lighten the ring or move the bracelet to the other wrist. The finish is worth aligning: a brushed steel case beside a high-polish ring shows the difference at close range, while brushed beside brushed is quiet. The metal colour need not match; a yellow ring with a steel watch is an ordinary sight.

A knuckle larger than the finger behind it

Many hands have a knuckle wider than the base of the finger, and the difference grows with age and work. A ring has to pass the knuckle to go on, so it is at least as large as the knuckle, and it then sits on a smaller base where it can turn and ride up. A wide ring makes this worse, covering more finger with more knuckle to clear. The practical size is one that passes the knuckle with firm pressure rather than easily, because the knuckle then holds the ring in place. A jeweller can add small beads inside the shank to take up slack at the base.

Choosing a Men's Gold Ring

Which finger should a first non-bridal ring go on?

The ring finger of the right hand is the usual starting point, because the eye expects a ring there and the finger is sheltered between two neighbours. A first ring worn there attracts the least comment and takes the fewest knocks.

The middle finger is the next choice and suits a larger ring, since it is the central and longest finger and is seen squarely from the front. A ring there reads as a deliberate piece rather than a habit.

The index and little fingers are more exposed and more noticeable, and are usually chosen once the wearer knows he likes wearing a ring at all and has a sense of the scale that suits his hand.

What changes when a ring moves from the ring finger to the middle finger?

Two things: how it is seen and how it is hit. On the middle finger the ring sits at the centre of the hand and is seen from the front, so a wide top or a large face reads at its full size. On the ring finger it sits to one side and is partly shielded.

The middle finger is also longer, so a ring there sits further from the palm and meets fewer objects edge-on. It is a good site for a ring with some height to it.

The size usually changes as well. The middle finger is normally the largest of the four, and a ring moved there from the ring finger will often need to go up half a size or more.

Is a pinky ring sized differently from other rings?

In practice it is, because the little finger has an awkward shape. Its knuckle is often large in relation to the slim base of the finger, so a ring must be big enough to pass the knuckle and then rests on something smaller.

The usual result is a ring that fits the knuckle firmly and turns a little at the base. That is normal for a pinky ring, and a jeweller can fit small beads inside the shank to steady it if the turning is a nuisance.

Because the finger is short, a wide ring covers a large part of it and can press against the knuckle when the hand closes. Pinky rings are therefore generally kept narrower than rings on the other fingers.

Does a pinky ring get in the way when writing or typing?

Less than a ring on the index or middle finger, since the little finger does little of the work in either. What a pinky ring does meet is the desk: the outer edge of the hand rests on it, and the ring's outer side takes that contact all day.

That contact polishes the outer face of the ring bright and, on a signet, can wear the edge of the face over years. It is the reason a pinky ring is often chosen with a rounded profile that rolls on the desk rather than catching.

Someone who writes a great deal by hand may notice the ring at first, but the little finger trails the pen rather than holding it, and the awareness passes within days.

Can a stone-set ring be worn under work gloves?

It can if the stone is set low. A glove pulled on drags over the top of the ring, and a raised stone is the first thing the fabric or leather catches. Repeated over months that catching works at the setting and can lift the stone.

A stone set level with or below the surrounding gold is passed over by the glove as if it were plain metal. The listing states the setting, and the side view in the photographs shows the height.

Some trades take rings off altogether, because a ring that catches on machinery is a hazard whatever its setting. In those cases the ring is worn outside work and a low setting still helps it survive the rest of the day.

Should a ring be worn on the hand that wears the watch?

Either works, and the choice is about crowding. A watch, a bracelet and a ring on the same arm make three pieces within a few inches, which reads as a deliberate arrangement when the scales agree and as clutter when they do not.

Putting the ring on the other hand spreads the pieces and lets each be seen alone. Many wearers keep the watch and the bracelet together and the ring on the opposite hand for that reason.

If the ring and the watch share a hand, aligning their finish keeps the pairing quiet. A brushed watch case and a brushed ring, or polished with polished, sit together better than one of each.

What families of men's rings exist outside wedding bands?

Five cover nearly everything: the signet, with a flat face on top; the nugget, with a cast textured surface; the religious ring, carrying a symbol or inscription; the band ring, a plain or patterned circle worn as ornament; and the stone-set ring, holding one or more stones at any height.

Each family has its own page explaining how it is made and worn. This page is concerned with the choices that apply across all of them: the finger, the setting height, and the fit over the knuckle.

A ring can belong to two families at once, a signet with a small stone or a band with a religious motif. The listing names the family it is catalogued under and describes the rest.

Should I measure my finger at the knuckle or at the base?

Both, and compare them. The ring must pass the knuckle, so the knuckle measurement sets the minimum. The base measurement tells you how loose the ring will then be once it is on, and the difference between the two is the amount of slack to expect.

If the two are close, size to the base and the ring will pass the knuckle with a push. If the knuckle is much larger, size to pass the knuckle firmly rather than easily, since the knuckle then keeps the ring from coming off.

Measure at the end of the day and in a warm room, when the fingers are at their largest. A ring sized to a cold morning hand is tight by evening and tighter still in summer.

How do I size a wide ring that has to pass a large knuckle?

Wider than a narrow ring in the same nominal size, because a wide band covers more of the finger and the knuckle has to pass through the whole width at once. A half size up from the narrow-ring measurement is the usual starting point, and a full size for very wide bands.

The knuckle is then the fitting point. The ring should go over it with steady pressure and not fall back over it when the hand hangs down. The base of the finger will feel loose by comparison, and that is expected.

That looseness is taken up by a jeweller adding small beads or a bar inside the shank, which narrows the opening at the base without changing the size the knuckle sees.

Should a ring be taken off for sleep, showers and the gym?

Sleep and showers are not a problem for a plain gold ring, and most wearers leave one on. A ring with a raised stone is another matter in bed, since it can catch on sheets and on the wearer's own face, and it is easier to remove it.

The gym is where rings are damaged. A bar or a dumbbell pressed against a ring crushes it against the bone, which can distort a thin band and loosen a stone. Rings are better off for the duration of a lifting session.

Soap and shampoo leave a film that dulls a polished ring over weeks. It rinses off with warm water and a soft brush, and is a reason to clean the ring rather than to take it off.
