Why 18K, and What Three-Quarters Gold Changes

18K carries the most gold of the karats commonly worn. This guide covers what that does to colour, to the metal's working properties, and to which pieces it suits best.

Understanding 18K Gold

What is 18K gold?

Eighteen parts gold in twenty-four - three-quarters of the metal by weight, with the remaining quarter made up of alloy metals.

It carries the most gold of the karats commonly used for wearable jewelry, which is why it reads richer and deeper in colour than 14K or 10K.

Higher karats exist but are impractical for daily wear: 22K and 24K are soft enough to deform in ordinary use.

Why does 18K gold look richer?

Because colour in gold jewelry comes from the proportion of gold to the metals blended with it, and 18K has the highest proportion of the three.

In yellow gold the difference is obvious even without a comparison piece - it reads deeper, warmer and more saturated.

In white gold the difference is far less visible, because white gold is usually rhodium-plated and it is the plating you are looking at.

Is 18K gold too soft for everyday wear?

It depends on the piece. A pendant or a pair of earrings takes almost no contact and keeps its finish for years in 18K.

A ring worn every day is the case where softness shows, because a hand meets more surfaces than anywhere else jewelry is worn.

Many owners choose 18K for pieces that come off during manual work and a lower karat for a band that never leaves the hand.

What does a 750 mark mean?

It is a fineness mark expressing gold content in parts per thousand: 750 parts gold in a thousand is three-quarters, which is 18K.

It is the convention used across much of Europe and elsewhere, where numeric fineness marks are more common than karat figures.

Marking practice varies between countries, so if the specific mark on a piece matters to you, it is worth asking about that piece rather than assuming one convention.

Why is 18K the standard in Europe but not the US?

It reflects different histories and different priorities rather than one being correct. Much of Europe, the Middle East and Asia settled on 18K for fine jewelry; the United States settled on 14K.

The trade-off behind the two conventions is the same one every buyer faces: colour depth against working hardness.

Both are widely made and widely worn, and neither is a compromise on the other's terms.

Does 18K gold tarnish?

Less than lower karats. Gold itself is chemically very stable and it is the alloy metals that react - 18K contains the least alloy of the three.

That makes it the least likely of the karats to dull with exposure to cosmetics, perspiration and chlorinated water.

It still benefits from the usual habits: take it off before swimming and cleaning, and wash it occasionally in warm soapy water.

Is 18K worth the extra cost over 14K?

It depends entirely on what you want from the piece. You are paying for gold content, and what you get back is colour depth and greater chemical stability.

If the colour is the reason you are buying gold at all, 18K delivers something 14K cannot.

If the piece is a band worn through every kind of daily activity, the softer metal is a real consideration and 14K may serve you better.

Can 18K gold be resized and repaired?

Yes. It is a standard working metal and any competent jeweller will size a ring or repair a chain in it.

Tell the jeweller the karat so the solder matches the piece - a mismatched solder shows as a colour difference at the join, and it is more visible on a rich 18K colour.

As always, whether a particular ring can be sized depends on the design rather than the metal.

Does 18K scratch more easily?

Yes, as a material property - less alloy means a softer metal, and softer metals mark more readily.

How much that matters depends on the piece. On a pendant or earrings it is barely relevant; on a daily ring it shows over years.

A jeweller can repolish a marked surface, which removes a very small amount of metal each time. Many owners come to prefer the softened, lived-in finish.

How should I care for 18K gold?

Warm water, a little mild soap, a genuinely soft brush and a soft cloth. Use a lighter hand than you would on a lower karat, since the metal is softer.

Keep it away from chlorine and household cleaning chemicals as routine, and take pieces off before swimming.

Store 18K so that harder metals and stones are not resting against it - it will mark more readily than a lower karat would.
