July birthstone - common questions

What is the July birthstone?

Ruby - corundum coloured red. It is the same mineral as sapphire, separated by colour rather than by composition.

Does a birthstone gift have to be a ring?

No. The month fixes the stone, not the format. Pendants and earrings carry no finger size to guess, though the fitting and the bail still have to suit what the recipient wears.

Are lab-grown stones suitable for a birthstone gift?

That is a preference rather than a rule. A laboratory-grown ruby is the same mineral as a mined one, grown under controlled conditions. Check the specification for which one a stone is, and ask if it is not given.

What size stone should I choose?

It depends on how the piece will be worn. A smaller stone suits everyday wear; a larger or clustered stone reads as an occasion piece. Check the specification for the dimensions.
