Paperclip Gold Chain

Each link starts as a length of wire bent around a long, narrow former so that it closes into a loop several times longer than it is wide. The wire ends meet on one long side and are soldered, and the ends of the loop are left rounded rather than cornered, which gives the link its resemblance to an office paperclip. The interior stays open. Drawing the link long puts most of the gold into two parallel straight bars and reduces the joints to a small part of the run, so a modest weight of metal covers a good distance and the eye reads the open rectangle as the pattern.

The links meet only at their rounded ends. One end of a link passes through the end of the next, and because the interior of each is far wider than the wire, both can settle into the same plane with the rounded end of one nested inside the other. There is no quarter turn between neighbours as there is in a chain of small round links; the whole run lies in one plane, and the joints show as short overlaps between long straight sections. From a step away the chain is a row of frames laid end to end, each outlined by a bright line of gold.

Light on a paperclip chain travels along the long edges. A polished bar of gold reflects as a stroke rather than a point, so each link shows two parallel strokes of light that lengthen and shorten as the wearer moves, and the run as a whole flashes in long dashes rather than in glitter. Flat wire gives a broader, calmer stroke than round wire, and a diamond-cut edge breaks the stroke into a row of small flashes. The joints, where the ends overlap, are the only places the line of light is interrupted, which is why the pattern reads so clearly at a distance.

Width is quoted across the short axis of the link in millimetres, and the link is usually three to five times as long as it is wide. At the finer widths the chain is a delicate open line that layers well and carries a small pendant. In the middle widths the frames become individually legible and the chain is worn alone as a geometric run. At the wider widths, where the links are commonly hollow to keep the weight down, the chain becomes the statement of the outfit. The same link is worn at necklace lengths and at bracelet length, where a handful of frames make the whole piece.

The paperclip chain's design references exactly what the name suggests: elongated rectangular links with a clean, flat face. The style emerged as a serious fashion chain when designers began translating mundane industrial shapes into fine jewelry, and the paperclip became the most successful translation because its proportions work exceptionally well in gold — long enough to show karat color clearly, flat enough to lie perfectly against skin.

Why the Paperclip Became a Fashion Chain

The flat, elongated link reflects light in rectangular panels that appear and disappear as the chain moves. At wider widths (5mm+), this creates a striking alternating-flash effect that more traditional chain styles don't produce. The simplicity of the link also makes it a clean backdrop for pendants.

Layering and Styling

The paperclip has become the preferred choice for layering because its rectangular shape creates visual separation from round-link chains. A paperclip alongside a thin cable or rolo chain creates contrast in both shape and texture — the combination reads as intentional rather than accidental.

A narrow loop bent long, closed on the side

The link is formed by wrapping wire around a slender bar of the chosen width, then cutting each turn so that the two cut ends meet along one of the long sides. Bending the ends of the loop over the bar rounds them, and the cut is closed with solder once the link has been threaded through its neighbour. Placing the seam on a long side keeps the rounded ends unbroken, which matters because the ends are where the links bear on one another. The interior is not filled or bridged; the link is a frame and nothing more.

A run that bends only where the ends overlap

A long link cannot bend along its own length, so a paperclip chain has one joint for every link and a straight bar between joints. Around the neck it follows the curve as short straight segments, each link tilting a little against the next at the overlap, rather than as the smooth arc of a chain of small links. On the chest the links lie down together; at the sides of the neck, where the curve is tighter, a link can stand a fraction on its edge before settling. The chain does not roll, since the frames have a broad face and no rounded profile.

Long strokes of light along parallel bars

Each link presents two straight, polished bars to the light, and a straight bar reflects as a line. As the chest moves the reflection slides along the bar and hands over to the next link, so the chain seems traced by moving dashes. Wire with a flattened outer face gives a broad, steady stroke; round wire gives a thinner stroke with a soft edge. A diamond-cut chain has small planes cut along the outer edges, and the stroke becomes a run of separate flashes. The open interior stays dark throughout, and the contrast between bright bar and empty centre is what makes the pattern carry.

What the open frame admits, and how a link locks through its neighbour

An opening long enough to show the skin through it is long enough to admit other things. Knitwear loops, the edge of a button and the clasp of a finer chain can all pass into a frame, and the chain then has to be lifted clear rather than pulled. The more particular fault is a lock: if the chain is bunched and a link is pushed through the interior of its neighbour, it rests crossways through the frame and the run kinks there. It is released by passing the crossed link back the way it came; nothing bends, and the chain lies flat again at once.

Whole links out, and a clasp that hooks into any frame

Because each link is long, a paperclip chain is shortened by removing whole links, and the length changes in steps of one link. A jeweller opens the seam on the last unwanted link, lifts it away, and closes the seam on the link that now carries the clasp. That is also why the clasp is so often mounted directly on an end link, with the opposite end link serving as the ring it fastens to: a frame is wide enough to take a lobster hook without a jump ring, and the wearer can fasten it into any link to take up length a frame at a time.

A pendant fixed through a frame, or a bail left to slide

A pendant on a paperclip chain is usually hung through a link rather than over it. A jump ring passes through one frame and the pendant hangs from that point, held in place and lying flat in line with the links. A pendant on a bail behaves differently: the bail travels along the straight bar of a link, rides over the overlap at each joint and settles in the dip between two frames, so it rests at a joint rather than mid-link. A finer chain worn alongside lies over or under the frames and reads against them as a thread against a fence.

The flat, elongated link also reflects light in a distinct way from other chain styles. Unlike Cuban or rope chains that reflect from curved surfaces, the paperclip reflects from flat rectangular faces — light catches in panels that appear and disappear as the chain moves.

This layering quality is one reason the paperclip became a defining chain style for women's fine jewelry.
