Lab-grown diamond questions

Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes. It is the same material with the same crystal structure as a mined diamond. It differs in origin, not in substance. Simulants such as cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials and are not diamond.

What is the difference between HPHT and CVD?

They are two ways of growing the crystal. HPHT applies high pressure and high temperature to grow from a seed; CVD deposits carbon from a gas layer by layer at lower pressure. Both produce diamond, and the method is stated where it is known.

How do I know what grade a stone is?

From the individual listing. Grading is a property of one stone, so it belongs on that stone's page rather than in a description of the whole collection. Check whether a report is provided for the specific stone, and ask us if this is unclear.

Will a lab-grown stone wear differently over time?

Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds share the same crystal structure and hardness. The condition and features of the individual stone, its setting and how it is worn also affect the risk of damage.
