Heart designs, plain through to set

Heart Necklaces

Necklaces built around a heart motif, from plain polished forms to open and stone-set designs. Guidance below covers proportion, finish and pairing with a chain.

Hearts by Shape, Format & Gold Colour

The heart is one of the few motifs in jewelry that everybody recognises instantly, which means the interest lies almost entirely in how a particular design draws it. A puffed heart and an outline heart of the same width are very different objects, and they hang differently, catch light differently and suit different lengths. This page gathers heart designs in gold, including finished necklaces and pendants intended for a chain of the buyer's choosing; the format of a given design is stated on its listing.

Heart Shapes, Hanging and Length

Every heart design answers the same geometry in a different way. This guide covers the shape families, why some hearts sit square and others turn, what length suits a given silhouette, and the difference between a pendant and a station necklace.

Choosing a Heart Design

What is a puffed heart?

A puffed heart is built from two shaped halves soldered together round the edge, leaving a hollow interior. The result is a rounded three-dimensional shape rather than a flat outline, with a fine seam visible round the perimeter.

Because the inside is empty, the piece is light for the space it occupies, which is why puffed designs can be made comparatively large without becoming heavy on the chain.

The curved faces reflect light from many angles as the wearer moves, so a puffed heart stays lively in conditions where a flat face would go dull.

Why does my heart pendant sit crooked?

Almost always because of where the chain passes through it. A fitting placed at the cleft between the two lobes balances the shape; one placed off to a lobe leaves more weight on one side and the piece settles at an angle.

Some designs are drawn that way on purpose, with the heart intended to sit tilted. Where it is not intentional, a jeweller can reposition or replace the fitting.

A round jump ring also lets the pendant swivel freely on the chain. Swapping it for a flat fitting gives the piece a plane it prefers to lie in, which steadies it without altering the design.

Does a wide heart need a longer chain?

A wider shape generally benefits from a little more length, because the broad upper edge needs room to clear the base of the throat where the neck narrows. Crowded against that point, the outline is hard to read.

Depth matters too. A puffed design stands away from the body, so it wants space in front of it as well as below, whereas a flat heart lies close and can be worn shorter.

The measurement to compare is the height of the motif rather than its width, since that is what determines where the point of the heart finally falls.

What is a sideways heart necklace?

It is a heart turned ninety degrees so that it lies along the chain rather than hanging from it. The chain is attached at two points on the motif and passes through it, which fixes the orientation.

Because it can neither rotate nor swing, a sideways design sits flat against the collarbone and stays where it is put through the day, which is the main practical argument for the format.

It reads horizontally, so the outline does most of the work and the depth of the shape matters far less than on a hanging design.

How do interlocking hearts differ from a double heart?

A double heart is two shapes fixed in relation to each other, usually overlapping, and it behaves as a single rigid object. The overlap is often emphasised by using two different gold colours so the layering is legible.

Interlocking hearts are genuinely linked, each passing through the other like two rings. Neither is fixed, so they move independently and settle differently each time.

The practical difference is in wear: a rigid double heart hangs predictably, while an interlocking pair shifts, catches light in two planes and makes a faint sound against itself.

Is a heart necklace appropriate for a birthday or a graduation?

It is used at both, and rather widely. The motif has a long history as a token between family members and friends as well as between partners, so it carries no obligation to read romantically.

Scale and treatment do most of the signalling. A small plain heart on a fine chain reads as a keepsake; a large stone-set one reads as an occasion piece.

Where the intent is deliberately understated, a sideways or a station design tends to read as a piece of jewelry first and as a heart second, which keeps the gift from making a declaration nobody asked for.

What is a heart station necklace?

A station necklace carries several small motifs fixed at intervals along the chain instead of one pendant at the centre. The hearts are spaced so the design is spread across the collarbone.

Because the motifs sit higher and are distributed, the necklace stays visible under an open collar where a single hanging pendant would drop out of sight.

The chain and the motifs are one piece, so the length cannot be changed later in the way a pendant can be moved to a different chain.

Are these sold as complete necklaces or as pendants?

Both formats appear here. Some designs are finished necklaces supplied on their own chain, and some are heart pendants and charms intended to be hung on a chain the buyer already has or chooses separately.

The listing for a given design states which format it takes, along with the chain length where a chain is included and the dimensions of the motif itself in millimetres.

If a design is a pendant, the fitting at the top determines what chain widths will pass through it, so that measurement is the one to check before pairing it with an existing chain.

Why does an open heart look larger than a solid one of the same width?

Because the eye reads the outline rather than the mass. With the centre left empty, the shape is defined by a band of metal that traces its full extent, and nothing inside competes for attention.

Contrast helps as well. Skin or fabric showing through the middle gives the outline a background to stand against, and a sharp edge is read more accurately by the eye than a broad reflecting surface is.

Solid designs use their surface to catch light instead of relying on the outline, so they read as brighter but more compact than an open design of identical dimensions worn on the same chain.

What happens where the two lobes of a heart meet?

The cleft between the lobes is the most worked part of the shape. On a puffed design it is where the two halves are drawn together and the seam turns most sharply, so it is the point that takes the most attention at the bench.

It is also where the fitting is usually placed, because that position sits above the balance point of the shape and lets the heart hang square rather than tipping toward one lobe.

On open and pierced designs the cleft is where the band changes direction most abruptly, which is why it is drawn thicker there on well-resolved pieces.
