About Signet & Nugget Rings

What is a signet ring?

A ring with a flat or gently domed face, historically engraved with a crest, monogram or device cut in reverse so it could be pressed into wax to seal a document.

The ring functioned as a signature, which is why signets were associated with authority and inheritance.

The sealing function has gone but the form remains, because a broad face and a substantial band make an unusually good ring.

What is the difference between intaglio and relief engraving?

Intaglio cuts the design into the surface so it sits below the face. It is the traditional sealing method, and the design reads reversed on the ring and correct in the wax.

Relief engraving cuts away the background so the design stands proud of the face.

Modern signets are engraved either way, and unless the ring is genuinely meant to seal something, the choice is purely aesthetic.

What can I have engraved on a signet?

Initials and monograms are the most common. A traditional monogram arranges three letters with the surname's initial larger and in the centre.

Symbols, dates, devices and simple images are all possible, and the size of the face determines how much detail is legible.

Where a design is engravable, the listing states the available area. Engraved pieces are generally not returnable once the work is done, so check the text carefully.

What is a nugget ring?

A ring with an irregular, textured surface designed to suggest gold in its natural, unrefined form rather than a polished finish.

It is a twentieth-century style rather than an ancient one, and it reads as deliberately raw and substantial.

The texture has a practical benefit: an irregular surface disguises the small scratches that a polished band shows plainly, so it looks consistent for longer under hard wear.

What size should I order for a wide ring?

Usually a half size larger than you would take in a fine band. A wide ring covers more of the finger, feels tighter at the same nominal size, and passes a knuckle less easily.

Measure from a ring the wearer already wears at a similar width - measuring from a fine band will mislead you.

A comfort-fit interior, domed rather than flat, makes a real difference on a wide ring and is worth looking for.

Which finger is a signet ring worn on?

Traditionally the little finger of the non-dominant hand, which is where the sealing convention placed it and where it remained.

In practice signets are worn on any finger now, and the ring finger of the right hand is common.

There is no rule worth observing beyond what suits the wearer's hand and the width of the ring.

Are signet rings only for men?

No. Signets were historically worn by anyone with a seal to use, and they have been worn by women throughout their history.

The association with men's jewelry is a relatively recent convention rather than anything inherent to the form.

Smaller faces and narrower bands make the form work on any hand, and the range here covers a spread of widths.

Can a signet ring be engraved later?

Usually, yes. A plain signet face can be engraved by a jeweller at any point, which is one of the attractions of the form - it can be bought now and personalised later.

Hand engraving and machine engraving produce different looks, and it is worth asking to see examples of both.

Bear in mind that engraving removes metal, so a face can only be re-engraved a limited number of times.

Will a signet face get scratched?

A broad polished face is a large flat surface presented to the world, so yes - it collects fine marks with daily wear.

Most owners come to like that lived-in surface. Where they do not, a jeweller can repolish the face, which removes a very small amount of metal each time.

A textured or nugget finish disguises marks far better, which is one reason those designs suit heavy wear.

How do I clean a signet or nugget ring?

Warm water, a little mild soap and a soft brush, working into the engraving or the texture where residue collects and dulls the detail.

Textured and engraved surfaces need this more often than a plain band, simply because there are far more places for residue to sit.

Take the ring off for manual work - a wide band transmits force to the finger rather than flexing, which makes it uncomfortable in a firm grip.
