Wheat Gold Chain

Each strand of a wheat chain is itself a run of oval links, and each of those links is given a slight twist so that it sits at an angle rather than flat. Four such strands are then plaited together, each passing over and under the others in turn, in the same way a four-strand braid of cord is made. Because the links are twisted and the strands cross at a steady angle, all the links along the finished chain point in one direction, overlapping the next like scales. The braid is fixed by the interlocking of the links themselves, and there is no core running through the centre.

An ear of wheat is a stem covered in grains that all lean toward the tip and overlap the grain below. The chain has exactly that look: every link is a small pointed oval leaning the same way, each tucked under the one before it, in four rows spiralling gently around the axis. Seen close, the rows are distinct; from a step back they merge into a dense, tapering texture with a clear grain running along it. The direction of that grain is what tells one end of the chain from the other, though it makes no difference to how it is worn.

The plait is tight, and the twisted links lie against one another rather than standing proud, so a wheat chain runs smoothly under a finger drawn along it and does not catch on fabric or hair. It has no crests to lift and no gaps to lodge in. Because the four strands share every load between them, the chain feels dense and firm for its width, holds a smooth curve around the neck without wanting to fold, and does not stretch under a pendant. The surface catches light along the leaning edges of the links, giving a soft continuous sheen rather than a flash.

Wheat is made from around one millimetre, where the braid is too fine to read and the chain is a smooth bright cord under a small pendant, through two to three millimetres, where the grain becomes visible and the chain is worn alone, up to four and five millimetres and occasionally beyond, where the four rows are individually distinct. An open wheat has the strands plaited more loosely so gaps show between the links. A round wheat is the standard tight plait. A square wheat sets the four strands so that the section reads with four faces rather than as a circle. Listings state which.

The wheat chain — called spiga in Italian, meaning ear of wheat — is constructed from four strands of twisted oval links arranged in a repeating V-pattern. Unlike most chain styles built from identical repeating links, the wheat chain is assembled from a four-part pattern that requires precise alignment at every step. The result is a textured surface that looks braided and complex even at narrow widths.

How the Wheat Chain Is Woven

The four-strand V-weave gives it a rippled quality — the surface has a subtle texture to the touch that flat chains lack. The interlocking construction is also naturally resistant to kinking, because each link is supported by its neighbors in four directions. Well-made wheat chains move with a flowing quality that looser constructions can't match.

Why Wheat Chains Suit Certain Looks Better

The textured surface creates visual contrast with most pendant designs. Where a rope or box chain competes with a pendant's surface detail, the wheat chain's consistent texture provides a neutral base that makes pendant finishes — polished, hammered, engraved — read more clearly.

Four strands of twisted ovals, plaited into one

The chain begins as four separate runs of small oval links, each link twisted through part of a turn so that it sits on the bias. The four runs are then woven together: strand one passes over strand two and under strand three, the next strand does the same one step along, and the sequence repeats, exactly as a four-strand plait of cord is made. As the plait tightens, the twisted links of each strand settle into the gaps left by the others, and the whole locks into a single dense cord. Nothing runs through the centre; the plait holds itself together through the interlocking of the links.

Why it resembles an ear of wheat

Because the links are twisted before they are plaited, every link along the finished chain leans the same way and overlaps the link ahead of it, in four rows that spiral slowly around the axis. That is the arrangement of grains on a wheat ear: each grain a small pointed oval, leaning toward the tip, tucked over the grain below. The resemblance is close enough that the name has stuck across languages. The lean gives the chain a visible grain, so a finger drawn one way along it slides and drawn the other way meets the tips of the links, as a hand does on a real ear of wheat.

A plaited surface that runs smooth under the finger

A wheat looks textured and feels smooth, and the reason is the tightness of the plait. Each twisted link is held down by the strands crossing over it, so no link stands proud of its neighbours, and the surface is a continuous run of gently leaning edges rather than a series of ridges. Drawn along the grain the chain is almost slick; drawn against it there is a faint resistance and no more. That is why a wheat does not lift threads from a jumper, does not catch hair at the nape, and sits comfortably under a collar, where a more open or more raised construction would rub.

Round in section, with no front and no back

Four strands plaited evenly around an axis make a cord that is circular in section, and a circular cord has no face. A wheat chain turns freely in the fingers, presents the same surface however it settles on the neck, and does not need to be rotated back the right way after being put on. It follows the neck as a smooth round line, standing a little proud of the skin rather than lying flat. The one asymmetry is the direction of the grain, which runs the same way along the whole chain and tells one end from the other, but the chain is worn indifferently either way round.

Open, round and square wheat as attributes

The same four-strand plait can be worked at different tensions and set in different sections, and listings use three names for the results. A round wheat is the standard tight plait, circular in section and dense along its length. An open wheat is plaited with the strands spaced further apart, so small gaps show between the leaning links and the chain reads lighter and slightly wider for its weight. A square wheat arranges the four strands so the section has four faces rather than a circle, giving a crisper outline with flat planes that catch light. All three are the same construction, worn and altered alike.

Why a break in one strand shows, and how it is put right

In a plaited chain the four strands share every pull, so no single link carries the whole load and the chain resists being pulled out of shape. The other side of that is that a failed link in one strand opens a gap in the plait rather than parting the chain. The three remaining strands continue, and the missing link shows as a loose loop in the dense surface. A jeweller does not open one link to fix it, since the links interlock across strands. Instead the chain is cut across at the damage, capped, and either a section is replaced or the chain shortened.

The result is a continuous, textured surface that resembles a braided wheat stalk.

This construction creates a chain that is both visually complex and surprisingly flexible. The four-strand twist gives it a tactile quality — it has a subtle ripple to the touch and a slightly wider, flatter profile than a single-strand chain of the same visual width.
