The Cuban link chain was engineered to solve a specific problem with earlier chain styles: most chains twist and rotate when worn, causing them to sit at an angle or bunch uncomfortably. The Cuban link's interlocking oval construction — where each link is locked into the next at a specific angle — prevents rotation. The chain lies flat against the chest at all times.

This flat-lying behavior is also what makes the Cuban link reflect light so consistently. Because every link sits at the same angle, the chain surface catches light in a uniform band rather than scattering it. At wider widths, this creates the mirror-like appearance that makes Cuban chains so visually striking.

The Miami Cuban variation emerged when jewelers enlarged the link proportions while maintaining the flat geometry. Larger links mean more surface area per inch, more weight, and more dominant presence. Standard Cuban links are typically more flexible and comfortable at narrower widths; Miami Cuban proportions work best at wider widths where the larger link scale looks balanced.
