Miami Cuban Gold Chain

Where an ordinary Cuban link nests into the next with a small opening still showing, a Miami link is closed so tightly that the ovals overlap through most of their length and the openings between them all but disappear. The wire is thicker again for the size of the ring, and after assembly the top of the chain is worked to a high dome, so that each link's exposed surface curves steeply from the centre line down to the edges. The finished chain is noticeably deeper front to back than a plain Cuban of the same width, and heavier for its length.

The dome changes the way the chain lies. A rounded link that is domed rather than merely cushioned presents a ridge along the centre of the chain, and light falling across it reflects from the crest as a single bright band that runs the whole length without a break. There is none of the alternation of link and seam that an ordinary Cuban shows; the seams are buried by the overlap and the eye follows the highlight as one line. Turning the chain shifts the band from side to side across the dome, and the effect is closer to a polished bar than a run of links.

The underside is the other half of the geometry. Once domed, the chain is passed over a flat lap that grinds the back of every link to a single plane, and the Miami profile therefore has a flat face against the skin and a domed face to the world. The flat back is what lets a chain of this depth lie still: it sits on the chest as a plate would, cannot rock from side to side, and does not roll. Because the links overlap so far, the chain also bends less freely than a plain Cuban, holding a firm smooth arc rather than a loose curve.

A Miami Cuban is fastened with a box clasp built to the same depth and dome as the links, so that the fastening reads as an unbroken part of the run, and at heavier widths it carries a hinged latch on each side of the housing. The chain is made from around six millimetres, where the dome is subtle, through eight to twelve millimetres, where the profile is unmistakable, up to eighteen millimetres and beyond. It is worn as the piece itself, most often on its own and outside the collar, and it is chosen precisely for the presence its depth and weight give it.

The Miami Cuban is a scaled-up refinement of the standard Cuban link: each individual link is larger, flatter, and with a more pronounced beveled edge than the classic oval Cuban. This enlarged geometry is specifically optimized for wider chains — at 8mm, 10mm, or 12mm, the Miami Cuban proportions look balanced and intentional where a standard Cuban at those widths can look stretched.

What Separates Miami Cuban from Standard Cuban

The flat face of each Miami Cuban link is wider relative to the link's height than a standard Cuban, meaning more surface area faces outward. More outward-facing surface means more consistent, intense light reflection across the full width of the chain. At wide widths, this creates the mirror-belt effect that makes the Miami Cuban the signature statement chain in heavy gold.

How to Choose Your Width

A 4–6mm Miami Cuban reads as bold but versatile for daily wear. An 8–10mm chain is unmistakably a focal piece. At 12mm and above the weight and presence become significant. Wider chains contain more gold, so width affects both how the chain wears and what it costs.

The tighter interlock that sets the Miami profile apart

Every Cuban nests one link into the next, but a Miami takes the nesting further. The ovals are drawn together until each overlaps its neighbour through most of its length, and the small openings that show along an ordinary Cuban close up to a line. Wire that is thicker for the ring size fills what space remains. The result is a chain with almost no daylight in it, in which the links behave less as separate hinges and more as segments of a single articulated bar. It is visible from across a room as a solidity a plain Cuban of the same width lacks.

A domed top, and a back ground flat

After assembly the top surface of the chain is worked to a high dome, so that each link's face curves steeply away from a crest along the centre line. The back is then ground on a flat lap until every link presents one plane to the skin. Seen in section, a Miami link is therefore a half-round: rounded above, flat below, and much deeper than it is on an ordinary Cuban. It is what allows a chain of this depth to sit stably, since a domed link with a domed back would rock, while a domed link on a flat base sits like a tile.

One continuous band of light along the crest

A dome reflects from its crest, and because the links overlap so far that the seams between them are buried, the crests of successive links join into an unbroken ridge. Light falling across the chain returns from that ridge as a single bright band running the full length, rather than the alternating rails and crescents an ordinary Cuban shows. As the chain turns, the band slides across the dome from one flank to the other, so the whole chain appears to brighten and dim as one object. A diamond-cut version breaks the ridge into small planes and glitters instead.

How the profile lies against the chest

The flat back sits on the skin as a plate, and the far overlap of the links means the chain has only a little movement at each joint. A Miami therefore holds a firm, smooth arc across the chest rather than draping into a loose curve, and it neither rolls nor rocks when the wearer moves. It rises higher off the body than a plain Cuban because of its depth, which is part of its presence: the dome catches light from a wider range of angles and the chain is seen from the side as well as the front.

The box clasp built to the link

A chain this deep needs a fastening of the same depth, and the box clasp on a Miami is made to it. The housing is shaped with the same dome on top and the same flat underside as the links, finished to the same width, so that when closed it reads as one more segment of the run. The folded tongue from the other end slides in and clicks against a spring, and on heavier widths a hinged latch on each flank snaps over the joint, so that the clasp cannot open unless both latches are lifted first.

Wearing a Miami Cuban

The profile is worn to be seen, and it is usually worn alone. Its depth means it stands out from the chest more than a flatter chain, and its weight means it stays exactly where it settles, so it is most often worn outside the collar or on bare skin where the full band of light along the crest is visible. A pendant is possible at the narrower widths, though the dome gives a bail a rounded surface to sit on rather than a flat one, and most Miami chains are worn without.

Standard Cuban links at those widths can look stretched because the standard link ratio wasn't designed for that scale.

Choosing width is the key decision. An 8–10mm chain is unmistakably a focal piece. At 12mm+, the chain has the weight and presence of a significant jewelry statement. Gold weight increases substantially with width — a 12mm chain in 14K will weigh several times more than a 6mm chain at the same length, which is also reflected in price.
