Engagement, wedding and anniversary, treated as one set of decisions

Bridal

Bridal jewelry is rarely bought all at once. An engagement ring comes first, a band joins it months later, and anniversary pieces arrive over years. The choices made at the start decide what is easy later.

Bridal jewelry, in the order it is worn

Engagement rings, wedding bands and anniversary pieces, in solid gold and platinum. Pieces here are bought years apart and still have to sit together on one hand, so the order they are chosen in matters as much as the individual choice.

Bridal questions

Does the wedding band have to match the engagement ring?

It has to sit against it. Matching the metal colour is the usual choice because the two rings are seen together on one finger, but fit matters more than match: a visible gap between them is noticed more than a difference in tone.

When is a contoured band needed instead of a straight one?

Jewellers generally point to two situations: a shank that is split, twisted or tapered rather than plain and even, and a centre stone set wide or low enough to overhang the shank - pear, marquise and oval shapes are the usual examples. In those cases a straight band cannot sit flush and a contoured band is shaped to follow the outline. A plain, even shank will usually take a straight band.

Should all three rings be bought at once?

No. Trio sets are sold together because matching is simpler when the rings are designed as a group, but buying separately over years is completely ordinary. The difference is only that each later piece is matched to a ring already on the hand rather than designed alongside it.

How far ahead should a made-to-order piece be ordered?

Count back from the date it is needed rather than forward from the date it is ordered, and ask for the current production time when you order - it varies by piece and by season.
