Gold Earrings

Earrings are the only jewelry that makes direct, prolonged contact with sensitive skin — the earlobe and the area directly around a piercing. This is why metal choice matters more for earrings than for any other piece. Base metals used in plated earrings — typically brass or copper — oxidize when in contact with skin moisture and can cause reactions at the piercing site. The gold coating wears away fastest at the post, which is exactly where it contacts the piercing. Genuine 10K or 14K gold is biocompatible and doesn't oxidize under normal wear.

The mechanics of hoop earrings are worth understanding when choosing between styles. Hinged hoop earrings — where the hoop opens at a hinge point — are more secure and easier to put on than tube hoops, where the post inserts into a hollow tube. For larger, heavier hoops, the hinge design is significantly more reliable for daily wear. Small hoops in the 10–15mm range work well in either construction; larger hoops above 25mm are better served by a hinged design.

Drop earrings require attention to post gauge. A thicker post distributes the earring's weight across more of the piercing, which is more comfortable for extended wear. Very thin posts on heavier drops can cause the earring to pull the piercing downward over time. For earrings worn for long periods, post thickness matters as much as the design.
