Franco Gold Bracelets

Franco Bracelets by Width, Weight & Clasp

A franco bracelet is the square V-link chain wrapped once around the wrist, and at that length it stops reading as a chain and starts reading as a cord. The square profile carries chevrons around the bracelet, giving it a cord-like appearance from several angles. Its movement and the appearance of each face depend on the particular construction and finish. This page covers how the pattern reads over a few inches, how the bracelet may turn on the wrist, how it copes with the movement of the wrist, what a desk edge and a shirt cuff do to it, how it is fastened, and how it is fitted and shortened. Check the width, weight and clasp type stated in the product details, and ask us about anything missing.

How a Franco Bracelet Sits, Rolls and Is Fitted

A franco on the wrist is a square cord fitted to a joint that moves constantly. This guide covers how the chevrons read at bracelet length, how it may turn on the arm, how it follows the wrist, what a desk and a cuff do to its corners, how a clasp is fitted to a square end, and how it is fitted and shortened.

A square cord read across the top of the wrist

Seen from above, a franco shows two of its four faces and the corner where they meet. Each face carries its row of chevrons, all pointing the same way, and the corner between them runs along the bracelet as a continuous bright line. Over the few inches that are visible at once, the chevrons are large enough to count on a wide bracelet and fine enough to read as a ribbed texture on a narrow one. In either case the eye follows the corner rather than the individual links, and the bracelet reads as a single square cord of gold curving round the arm.

How the square profile looks as it turns

The square profile can show a face and a corner as the bracelet changes position. Chevrons around the piece give visual continuity, but finishes may differ and the pattern does not guarantee constant or unrestricted turning. Check the particular clasp and end fittings in the product images and details; ask us if their orientation is unclear.

Following the inside of the wrist

The inside of the wrist is where a bracelet is folded when the hand bends back. A franco moves at its linked joints, but the square profile does not guarantee that pressure from a bent wrist will be spread evenly. How a specific bracelet sits through that movement depends on its width, weight and fit.

Corners against a desk, and a cuff passing over

A square section rests on a corner or on a face, and on the wrist a corner or a face meets the desk. How the finish of a specific bracelet changes with that contact, including the facets of a diamond-cut franco, depends on its construction, finish and use; ask a jeweller before any polishing. Check the chevrons, finish and clasp against the cuff fabric; the square profile does not guarantee snag-free movement.

Capping a square end for the clasp

A franco bracelet needs an end connection between its linked body and clasp; the exact fitting depends on the design. Clasp types and end fittings vary by piece. Check the clasp type in the product details and the product images, and ask us if it is not stated.

Fit and shortening

Choose a fit that allows comfortable hand movement without letting the bracelet slip over the hand. Its interwoven pattern may make shortening more involved than removing a link from a simple link bracelet. Whether and how a specific bracelet can be shortened, from which end, and by how much, depends on its construction and clasp; ask a jeweller before any alteration.

Franco on the Wrist

What is a franco bracelet?

A bracelet made from the franco link, which is a small V of wire hooked into its neighbours on four sides so that the chain is square in section with a row of chevrons down each face. At bracelet length it reads as a square cord rather than as a row of links.

Its square profile gives it distinct faces and corners, but movement, flexibility and contact with desks or cuffs depend on its construction and fit. Compare the finish on the actual piece rather than assuming every face looks identical.

Check the width, weight and clasp type stated in the product details, and ask us about anything missing.

Does a franco bracelet roll on the wrist?

It may turn on the wrist, depending on its construction, width and fit. A square profile with chevrons around the piece can keep a similar visual theme as different faces come into view, but it does not guarantee constant or unrestricted rolling.

The clasp, end fittings and finish can affect which side is comfortable or intended to face outward. Check the specific bracelet in the product images and details, and ask us if anything is unclear.

Why can a franco bracelet look like a cord rather than separate links?

The closely arranged V-link pattern and square profile can make a franco bracelet look like a cord rather than a row of separate links. That is a visual description, not a guarantee that it bends equally in every direction or feels as flexible as a rope.

Flexibility and feel depend on the particular construction, width and fit. Weight varies by piece; compare any stated weight and ask us about the bracelet you are considering.

Does a franco bracelet pinch when the hand bends back?

The square profile does not guarantee that a franco bracelet will avoid pressure or pinching at the inside of a bent wrist. Whether a specific bracelet presses into the skin depends on its width, weight and fit; it is worth trying a bracelet with the hand bent back before settling on a length.

Does a desk affect the corners of a franco bracelet?

A square section may contact a desk on a face or corner, depending on how the bracelet sits. How the finish of a specific bracelet changes with that contact, including the facets of a diamond-cut franco, and whether it can be evened by polishing, depends on its construction, finish and use; ask a jeweller before any polishing.

Will a franco bracelet pass under a shirt cuff?

The chevron pattern does not guarantee that a cuff will pass without catching. Link finish, the clasp and the fabric all affect the result.

Whether a wider bracelet passes comfortably under a cuff depends on its width and fit.

Loosely knitted fabrics can catch on any patterned bracelet.

What fastening does a franco bracelet use?

Clasp types and end fittings vary by piece. The linked body connects to the clasp through an end fitting appropriate to the design; a lobster clasp is a sprung hook closing on a ring, and a box clasp is a housing into which a tongue clicks. Check the clasp type in the product details and the product images, and ask us if it is not stated. Ask a jeweller to check the end fittings if a bracelet ever feels loose.

How should a franco bracelet fit?

With enough clearance for comfortable hand movement while remaining secure on the wrist. It should not need to roll constantly to fit correctly.

Fit is a matter of preference and of the bracelet's width and weight; a jeweller can advise on the allowance for a specific piece.

How a specific bracelet can be shortened depends on its construction; ask a jeweller. It is worth trying the bracelet with the hand bent back before settling on a length.

Can a franco bracelet be shortened?

The interwoven V-link pattern can make shortening more involved than removing a link from a simple link bracelet. Whether and how a specific bracelet can be shortened, from which end, and by how much, depends on its construction and clasp; ask a jeweller before any alteration.

Can a franco bracelet be worn next to a watch?

It can. Whether a watch case or another bracelet marks a specific franco over time depends on the pieces and how they are worn; ask a jeweller about a particular combination.

Beside other bracelets, a franco adds a square-profile texture; check the particular combination for rubbing or catching.

Two francos of different widths sit well together, since the two square cords read as one texture at two scales, while keeping a related visual theme. Two of the same width can read as a single bracelet.
