Gold Stud Earrings | 14K Studs with Screw Backs

Studs by Scale, Back Type & Design

Gold stud earrings in 14K, across solitaire, halo, cluster, ball and motif designs, set with CZ, diamond, pearl and coloured stones. Screw backs appear widely through the range, which matters on an earring meant to be left in. Studs are sized in millimetres and every listing gives the dimensions, the back type and the gold colour.

Scale, Backs and Everyday Wear in Stud Earrings

Studs are bought by eye and kept or lost on the fitting. This guide covers judging millimetre scale, the back types, second piercings, and what constant wear actually asks for.

Reading stud size in millimetres

Studs are described by their diameter across the front, and the figures are consistently smaller than people expect from a photograph. Three to four millimetres is a fine everyday stud that reads as a point of light rather than an object. Five to six millimetres is clearly visible at conversational distance and is the most common choice for a first good pair. Eight millimetres and above occupies the lobe and reads as deliberate. Mark the stated figure on a ruler and hold it to your ear before deciding.

Screw backs, friction backs and locking backs

A friction or butterfly back grips the post by tension. It is quick, it is the standard fitting, and it loosens gradually with handling - which is why it accounts for most lost studs. A screw back has a threaded post and a back that winds onto it, so it cannot work loose on its own; it takes longer to put on and is the sensible choice for earrings worn continuously. Locking backs sit between the two, clipping positively onto a grooved post. For a pair that will rarely come out, the back deserves as much thought as the front.

Sleeping in studs, and what that asks of a design

A great many people sleep in their studs, and a stud is the only earring style that really permits it. What makes a design suitable is a low profile, a smooth outline without sharp points, and a back that will not work loose against a pillow. Flat-backed fittings, where the back is a smooth disc rather than a butterfly, are the most comfortable for this and the least likely to press into the skin. Any design with a raised setting or a pointed stone is better taken out at night.

Second and third piercings

Studs are the natural choice for a second or third lobe piercing, because several small studs sit together in a way hoops and drops cannot. The usual approach is a graduated one: the largest stud in the first hole and progressively smaller ones above it, which reads as deliberate rather than accidental. Mixing metals across a set of piercings is entirely conventional now, and a two-tone piece somewhere in the group ties a mixed set together.

Matching a pair, and what the stones do

Two studs sit either side of a face and get compared constantly, so the stones want to agree in size, colour and cut in a way that matters less on a single-stone ring. Stones vary across this range - each listing names what is set - and manufactured stones such as cubic zirconia are consistent by nature, which is part of why they are so widely used in studs. Where a natural stone is used, matching is genuine selection work.

Cleaning, which studs need more than most pieces

Studs collect more residue than any other jewelry, because they sit against skin behind the ear where hair products, cleanser and the skin's own oils all reach them, and because they are often left in for weeks. Clean the front, the post and the back with warm water, a little mild soap and a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly. Put earrings in after hairspray and perfume. Check friction backs periodically for grip, and store pairs together.

Choosing Gold Stud Earrings

What size stud earrings should I choose?

Studs are measured in millimetres across the front, and the numbers read smaller in real life than in a photograph.

Three to four millimetres is a discreet everyday stud; five to six is clearly visible at conversational distance; eight and above is a deliberate statement.

Mark the stated figure on a ruler and hold it against your ear - it takes seconds and is far more reliable than judging from an image.

What is a screw back and is it worth it?

A screw back has a threaded post, and the back winds onto it rather than gripping by friction, so it cannot simply work loose.

It is the sensible choice for earrings worn continuously and for children, and it is the single most effective way to stop losing studs.

The trade-off is time: screw backs take longer to put on and take off than a friction back does.

Why do I keep losing one earring?

Almost always the back. A friction back grips the post by tension, and that tension gradually relaxes with handling until the back no longer holds.

Replacing friction backs with locking or screw backs is inexpensive and solves it permanently.

It is also worth checking the post for a groove - some posts are notched to hold a locking back, and a plain back on a notched post will not grip properly.

Can I sleep in gold stud earrings?

Studs are the one earring style that really permits it, and many people do.

What makes a design suitable is a low profile, a smooth outline without sharp points, and a back that will not work loose against a pillow. Flat-backed fittings are the most comfortable for this.

Anything with a raised setting or a pointed stone is better taken out at night, and any new piercing should follow whatever aftercare advice it came with.

What studs suit a second piercing?

Smaller ones. The usual approach is graduated - the largest stud in the first hole and progressively smaller ones above it, which reads as deliberate rather than accidental.

Studs work far better than hoops or drops in a second or third piercing, because several small pieces can sit close together without tangling.

Mixing metals across a set of piercings is entirely conventional, and a two-tone piece somewhere in the group ties a mixed set together.

Are the two stones in a pair matched?

Yes - a pair is assembled from stones chosen to agree with one another, which is a different exercise from selecting a single centre stone for a ring.

Size, colour and cut all need to agree - a stone slightly larger or warmer than its partner reads immediately.

If one of a pair is ever lost, replacing it to match is harder than buying the pair was. Each listing names what is set, which is the information a jeweller would need.

What is a halo stud?

A halo stud rings a centre stone with smaller stones set close around it, with very little metal showing between them.

The eye reads the whole cluster as one bright object rather than a stone with a border, so a halo stud presents considerably larger than its centre stone alone.

It is the most efficient way to get visual scale on a lobe, which is why halos are so common in stud designs.

Are gold studs suitable for children?

Small, light studs with a screw back are the usual choice, and screw backs exist largely for this reason.

Scale matters more than anything: a small stud sits flat and catches on nothing, which is exactly what a child needs.

Any advice about a new piercing itself is a matter for whoever performed it rather than for a jeweller.

Do stud earrings stretch your ears?

Studs are the least likely earring to, because they are small and light and the load on the piercing is minimal.

Stretching over years is associated with consistently heavy earrings - large hoops and long drops - rather than with studs.

If you wear heavier pieces regularly, alternating them with light studs gives the lobe a rest.

How do I clean stud earrings?

The back of the setting and the length of the post matter more than the visible front, because that is where residue collects out of sight.

Studs need it more often than other pieces, because they sit against skin behind the ear and are frequently left in for weeks at a time.

Sequence helps as much as method: put studs in after hairspray and perfume rather than before, and take them out before anything that involves chlorinated water.
