15 Años & Devotional Rings

Rings for the quinceañera and for everyday devotion, in 14K gold: 15 Años designs, Our Lady of Guadalupe, crosses, crucifixes and heart motifs, with tricolor and two-tone goldwork throughout and cubic zirconia settings on many designs. These are pieces bought for a specific occasion and kept for decades. Each listing gives the design, the gold colour and the sizes offered.

Choosing a Quinceañera or Devotional Ring

A quinceañera ring is chosen for one specific day and worn for many years after it. This guide covers the tradition, who traditionally gives the ring, sizing for a fifteen-year-old, and the devotional designs alongside it.

What the quinceañera ring is for

The quinceañera celebrates a girl's fifteenth birthday and her passage into young adulthood, and it is marked across Mexico, much of Latin America and Latino communities in the United States. Within the celebration a number of symbolic gifts are traditionally presented, and a ring is among the most enduring of them. Practices vary considerably between families, regions and parishes - some centre the day on a Mass, others on the reception - so the piece is best chosen with the particular family's expectations in mind rather than a general template.

Sizing a ring for a fifteen-year-old

This is the practical difficulty, and it is worth taking seriously. A fifteen-year-old may still be growing, and a ring bought to fit exactly on the day may not fit in two years. The usual approaches are to size for the present and accept that resizing may be needed later, or to choose a design that resizes easily - plain shoulders, stones only at the centre - rather than one set all the way around. Measure from a ring she already wears on the intended finger rather than estimating.

Who gives the ring, and where it sits among the gifts

In most families the ring comes from the parents, though it is common for a padrino or madrina to be asked to sponsor it, which is a defined role rather than an informal offer. Several symbolic gifts are presented during the celebration, and where sponsorship is arranged each of them tends to have its own sponsor. The ring is usually the one kept longest, which is part of why it is treated as a gift in its own right. Because arrangements differ so much from family to family, asking who has been asked to provide what avoids two people arriving with the same thing.

The devotional designs

Alongside the quinceañera pieces sit rings carrying religious imagery worn throughout the year: Our Lady of Guadalupe, crosses, crucifixes and sacred heart motifs. These are often bought for confirmations and birthdays as much as for the quinceañera itself, and many people wear one continuously rather than for occasions. Where a devotion is specific to a family or a person, knowing which one matters more than any question of design, and the listing names the devotion a ring carries so that can be checked before buying.

Reading the stones

Many designs in this part of the collection are set with cubic zirconia, a man-made stone used widely in gold jewelry for its brightness and its consistency from piece to piece. Others use coloured stones or are worked entirely in gold. Each listing names what is set, and that line is worth reading, because cubic zirconia and gemstones are not graded or priced the same way and they are cared for differently.

What happens to the ring after the day

These rings are worn far longer than the occasion that prompted them, and most move fairly quickly from being an occasion piece into ordinary rotation. Fingers change between fifteen and twenty-five, so a resize at some point is to be expected rather than a sign that the wrong size was bought; a design with plain shoulders takes that work more easily than one set all the way around. A lower profile and a protected setting also cope better with constant wear than a tall, exposed one. Some rings are set aside and kept instead, and a good many are passed on within the family.

Quinceañera & Religious Ring Questions

What is a quinceañera ring?

A ring given to mark a girl's fifteenth birthday, which in Mexican, Latin American and Latino traditions is celebrated as her passage into young adulthood.

It is one of several symbolic gifts traditionally presented during the celebration, and it is among the most lasting of them.

Practices vary between families, regions and parishes, so it is worth choosing with the particular family's expectations in mind rather than a general rule.

What ring size should I buy for a fifteen-year-old?

Measure from a ring she already wears on the intended finger rather than estimating, and take the reading at a normal time of day.

The complication is that she may still be growing, so a ring that fits exactly now may need resizing later.

Choosing a design that resizes easily - plain shoulders, stones only at the centre rather than set all the way around - leaves that option open.

Who traditionally gives the quinceañera ring?

Most often the parents. In many families, though, a padrino or madrina is asked to sponsor the ring specifically, which is a recognised role rather than an informal gesture.

Where sponsorship is arranged, each of the symbolic gifts presented during the celebration tends to have its own sponsor, so the ring may well come from someone other than the parents.

Arrangements differ a great deal from one family to the next, so it is worth asking who has been asked to provide what before buying anything, since that is how duplicated gifts are avoided.

Is a devotional ring or a devotional pendant the better gift?

A ring is seen constantly by the person wearing it, and it meets everything her hands meet. A pendant sits under clothing and is far less exposed to knocks and catching.

Sizing is the other consideration. A pendant needs no measurement at all, which makes it the safer choice when you cannot get a ring size, or when a young woman is still growing.

Both forms carry the same imagery, and each listing names the devotion a piece carries, so the choice is about how it will be worn rather than what it depicts.

Are these rings set with real gemstones?

Many are set with cubic zirconia, a man-made stone used widely in gold jewelry for its brightness and its consistency from piece to piece.

Others use coloured stones, and some are worked entirely in gold with no stones at all.

Each listing names what is set. It is worth reading, because cubic zirconia and gemstones are not priced the same way and are cared for differently.

Can a quinceañera ring be worn every day afterwards?

Most are, and many are worn for decades. That is rather the point of giving one.

For daily wear, a lower profile and a protected setting hold up better than a tall, exposed design, simply because there is less standing proud of the finger.

Having the setting checked occasionally is worth doing on any stone-set ring worn constantly.

What other jewelry is traditionally given at a quinceañera?

A ring is among the most common, and it is often accompanied by other symbolic gifts presented during the celebration.

Practices differ considerably between families and regions, and between celebrations centred on a Mass and those centred on the reception.

The most reliable guide is the family's own tradition rather than a general list - asking avoids giving something that duplicates what someone else has planned.

Are these rings only for the quinceañera?

No. The devotional designs - Guadalupe, crosses, crucifixes and sacred heart motifs - are worn year-round and are frequently bought for confirmations, birthdays and as everyday pieces.

Many people wear a devotional ring continuously rather than for occasions.

The quinceañera designs are the ones tied to a specific date; the rest are not.

What if I do not know which devotion is theirs?

It is worth asking, because a devotion is usually specific to a family or a person rather than generic.

Where you genuinely cannot, a plain cross is the most universally worn devotional design and the least likely to be wrong.

A confirmation name, where there is one, is often the most direct clue to which saint or devotion matters to someone.

Is a quinceañera ring worn on a particular finger?

There is no single rule. Many are worn on the ring finger of the right hand, which keeps them clear of anything worn later on the left, but families and regions differ.

Others are worn on whichever finger the ring happens to fit, and it is common for it to move hands over the years as fingers change.

It matters practically only for sizing: measure the finger the ring is actually going to be worn on, since the two hands are rarely the same.
