Shop Wedding Bands by Profile, Width & Finish

Gold wedding bands in yellow, white and rose gold, plain and patterned, across the widths and profiles that suit different hands. This is the hub for the bands on this site: the men's, women's and diamond-set pages each narrow the ground, and this page sets out the vocabulary they share. A band is a small object described by a handful of measurements, and once those measurements are understood a listing reads clearly. Each listing gives the metal colour, the width, the profile and the sizes that design is offered in.

Four things describe a plain band: the profile, the width, the finish and any pattern cut into the surface. Profile is the shape of the metal seen end-on, and it decides what the finger feels. Width is the measurement across the band from edge to edge, and it decides what the eye sees. Finish is the treatment of the surface, and pattern is anything worked into it beyond that. A listing names the first two in millimetres and the second two in words, and reading a band means reading those four items in that order.

The profile is felt rather than seen. A flat band offers two defined outer edges to the fingers on either side, which is noticed most when the hand is held closed. A half-round band presents a curve to those neighbours instead, so nothing is felt at the edges at all. A comfort-fit interior turns that same idea inward: the inside of the ring is rounded, so the band rests on a narrow line of contact and rolls a little as the finger bends rather than gripping across its full width. A knife-edge carries a ridge along the outside that the thumb finds constantly.

Width is read against the hand rather than against the finger alone. Seen from across a table, a band is a stripe of metal crossing a hand, and the same stripe is a different proportion of a long, narrow hand than of a broad, short one. The knuckle matters too, because a band sits below it and a prominent knuckle makes the space the band occupies look shorter than it is. The widths people choose most often are the ones that read as a considered line rather than as either a thread or a cuff.

Finish and pattern are a map rather than a ranking. Plain bands are polished, brushed or matte, and the choice is about how much the surface reflects. Milgrain adds a row of tiny beads along each edge. Diamond-cut bands carry small flat facets that flash. Two-tone and tricolor bands combine gold colours in one ring. Beyond the map, two situations need their own thought and are covered below: the band chosen when there is no engagement ring for it to answer to, and the band bought as a surprise.

A Guide to Gold Wedding Bands

A wedding band is a simpler object than most jewellery and a more consequential one, since it is chosen once and then worn without much further thought. This guide takes the decisions in the order they are usually met: how each profile meets the finger, what a bevelled edge is for, how width reads against a whole hand, what the finish and pattern families are, how a band is chosen when it will be the only ring, and how one is bought without the wearer knowing.

How each profile meets the finger

A finger is not a cylinder. It is broader at the base than at the middle, it flexes at the knuckle, and it changes size through the day, and each profile meets that shape differently. A flat band with a flat interior touches along its two inner edges only. A half-round band lies flat inside and curves outside, so the neighbouring fingers feel a curve rather than a corner. A comfort-fit band is rounded inside, so the contact is a narrow line and the edges stand fractionally clear. A knife-edge is a half-round brought to a ridge, and it is the profile the wearer is most aware of.

The bevel, and what it does at the edge

A bevelled band is a flat band whose two outer corners have been cut away at an angle, leaving a narrow sloping face along each edge. Visually, the bevel catches light along two lines that run right round the ring, so a plain band gains a pair of bright borders without any pattern being added. On the hand, it removes the square corner that a flat profile presents to the fingers on either side, and it does so without giving up the flat face across the top. A bevel can be polished while the face is brushed, or the reverse, and that contrast is much of its appeal.

Width seen against the whole hand

A band is looked at from arm's length far more often than from close to, and at that distance it is judged against the back of the hand rather than against the finger. On a long hand with slender fingers, a moderate width reads as a fine line and a broad one reads as deliberate. On a compact hand with short fingers, the same moderate width already reads as substantial, and a broad one takes up most of the segment between the knuckle and the base. The useful comparison is with a band the wearer has already worn, since the figure alone says little.

The finish and pattern families, as a map

Plain bands are the largest family and are divided by surface: a high polish reflects like a mirror, a brushed surface carries fine parallel lines that scatter light, and a matte or satin surface is duller still. Milgrain bands add a beaded border along each edge, which gives a plain ring an antique cast. Diamond-cut bands are faceted with a cutting tool so that small flat planes flash as the hand moves. Two-tone bands combine two gold colours, usually as a centre stripe with contrasting edges, and tricolor bands use three. Knowing the family narrows the choice before any individual design is looked at.

Choosing a band with no engagement ring to answer to

Many couples exchange bands only, and a band chosen in that situation is a different decision from one chosen to sit beside an existing ring. It has no shank to agree with, no setting to clear and no metal colour to match. In practice a band that will be the only ring on the hand is often chosen a little wider than one bought as half of a pair, and is more often given a bevel, a milgrain edge or a pattern, because it marks the hand on its own. Profile is chosen for comfort alone, since nothing else will touch it.

Buying a band as a surprise

A band bought without the wearer's knowledge has two problems: the size and the taste. Size is solved by borrowing a ring the wearer keeps on the intended finger and measuring its inside, or by asking a friend who can find out without arousing suspicion. Taste is harder, and the safe course is to look at what the wearer already puts on: the metal colour they reach for, whether their pieces are polished or brushed, whether they wear anything wide. A plain band that resizes easily leaves room to correct a small error, and a band from the families the wearer already owns is rarely far wrong.

Choosing a Wedding Band

What does bevelled mean on a wedding band listing?

A bevelled band is a flat band whose two outer corners have been cut back at an angle, so that a narrow sloping face runs along each edge of the ring.

The bevel catches light as two continuous lines around the band, which gives a plain ring a pair of bright borders without adding any pattern to the face.

It also softens what the neighbouring fingers feel, since the square corner of a flat profile is removed while the flat top face is kept.

How does a knife-edge band feel when the hand closes around something?

A knife-edge carries a ridge along the centre of its outside, and when the hand grips a handle or a wheel that ridge is what meets the palm and the neighbouring fingers.

It is not sharp in any real sense, but it is noticeable in a way a domed or flat band is not, and the wearer tends to be aware of the ring for longer.

The ridge is also what the thumb finds when it reaches across to turn the ring, which many people come to like as a habit.

Does a half-round band feel different from a flat one of the same width?

Yes, and the difference is felt by the fingers on either side rather than by the finger wearing it. A flat band presents two corners to those neighbours; a half-round presents a curve.

On the inside the two are often the same, with a flat interior in both cases, unless the listing says the band is comfort fit.

The choice between them is therefore about the edges. People who hold their fingers close together, or who wear rings on adjacent fingers, tend to notice the corners of a flat band most.

Why does a band look narrower on the hand than in its photograph?

Because a listing photograph fills the frame with the ring, while on the hand the band is seen at arm's length against the whole back of the hand, and a stripe of a few millimetres is a small part of that view.

The knuckle makes the effect stronger, since a prominent one shortens the visible segment the band sits in, and the band reads as a line rather than as a surface.

Comparing the stated width with a band the wearer has already worn, rather than with the photograph, is the reliable way to picture it in place.

What is milgrain on a wedding band?

Milgrain is a row of tiny raised beads running along the edge of a band, cut into the metal with a small knurled wheel after the ring has been shaped.

It gives a plain band a fine decorated border and an antique character, since the technique was widely used on rings made a century ago.

Because the beads stand very slightly proud of the surface, they soften with years of wear, and a jeweller can re-cut them if the crispness is wanted back.

What does diamond-cut mean on a plain gold band?

It refers to a surface treatment rather than to any stone. Small flat facets are cut into the metal with a sharp tool, so the band flashes as it moves in the same way a faceted surface does.

On a band the facets are usually arranged as a pattern across the face or as a border along each edge, and the listing describes where they fall.

The effect depends on the facets staying crisp, which is why diamond-cut bands are more often chosen for hands that do not take heavy daily contact.

How is a wedding band chosen when there will be no engagement ring?

With more freedom than usual, since there is no existing ring to agree with. Width, profile, finish and colour are all open, and the band carries the whole role of marking the hand on its own.

A band worn as the only ring is often chosen slightly wider, and is more likely to carry a bevel, a milgrain edge or a pattern than one bought as half of a pair.

Profile can be decided for comfort alone, because nothing will be sitting beside the band to influence how its edges should be shaped or how much room it needs to leave.

Which finish families read as formal, and which as everyday?

A high polish is the most formal surface, because a mirror finish reads as new and deliberate. It suits a band that comes off for work and is worn on occasions.

Brushed, satin and matte surfaces read as everyday, partly because they look at home beside a watch or a bracelet and partly because they change less with contact.

Milgrain and diamond-cut sit between the two, dressier than a brushed band and less severe than a bare polish, and both are worn as daily bands by people who want a little ornament.

Which band designs are safest to buy as a surprise?

Plain bands in a familiar colour. A wearer who already owns yellow gold will accept a yellow band; someone whose pieces are all white will notice a change of colour at once.

A plain design can also be resized after the fact, which a pattern running the whole way round the ring cannot always accommodate cleanly, so plain is the forgiving choice.

Looking at whether the wearer's existing pieces are polished or brushed, and whether anything they wear is wide, answers most of the remaining questions before the purchase.

Can a band bought as a surprise be adjusted afterwards?

Usually, provided the design allows it. A plain band with an unbroken section of metal can be taken up or down by a jeweller, and a small correction is routine work.

Designs that run a pattern, a bevel or a row of beads round the entire ring are harder to alter without the join showing, so the listing is worth reading with that in mind.

The practical step is to note the size ordered and keep the paperwork, so that if the ring needs changing the starting point is known.
